The Institute for Forestry in Belgrade was founded in 1946 as an independent scientifically research facility. The activities of the Institute consist of primary, applied, and developmental studies aimed at satisfying the needs of the users of the study results. The Institute was carried outand completed numerous highly rated international and national projects in the field of afforestation, recultivation of damaged soils, soil protection from erosion, and implementing new technologies for processing planting materials and afforestation of extreme sites. The Institute received the highest recognitions, both national and international ones, for the results achieved in these fields. The Institute is engaged in scientific-research work and engineering services in the fields of forestry, horticulture, wildlife management, erosion, and forest utilization. The main preoccupation of the scientific and skilled workers at the Institute is the study, advancement, and discovery of optimal methods in the production of planting materials, afforestation of barelands, melioration of degraded forests, and forest tending and protection. As a result of that work, large areas of new forests were erected on the barren tracts of the Pester plateau, Vlasina, gorge of the river Ibar, and other regions. Emphasis needs to be placed on the Institute’s success in the revitalization of heavily degraded forest sites and mine repositories, such as the one belonging to the “Kolubara” open pit mine. Since 1960, approximately 400,000 ha of land in Serbia have been afforested and meliorated, which is a cultural and civilizational accomplishment.
